Kinesio Taping

Paul E. Colosky Jr., MPT, MS, ATC, CSCS has recently completed all the continuing education requirements to become certified in Kinesio Taping.

Kinesio Tape is an elastic form of tape, invented Dr. Kenzo Kase in 1973.  By mimicking the qualities of human skin, Kinesio Tape can provide proven, comfortable treatment during any stage of injury.

Kinesio Tape has been in use in the U.S. since 1995, and had a tremendous amount of support from the Olympians in the 2009 Summer Olympics.

How does Kinesio Tape work? - Through its application process, Kinesio_TapeKinesio Tape can affect the sensors of the skin.  Through manipulation of these sensors, the KT Method can change the healing processes of the body.  All layers of the human body are interconnected, this means that by applying KT on the surface of the skin, it is possible to affect change in much deeper tissue groups.

What are the different application types? -

  • Facilitation- Assist in holding a joint in position so an overstretched muscle is supported.  Overstretched muscles are often very weak.  Once the muscle is given time to return closer to a typical length, it can be strengthen more efficiently.
  • Inhibition - Assist in relaxing an overused muscle to allow for more ideal alignment through a joint.  Relaxing overused or spasming muscles can allow correct or prevent myofasical trigger point.
  • Tendon Correction - Assist in supporting the tendon and increasing your awareness at the joint, which increases use and in turn increases strength.
  • Space Correction - Assist in reducing pain by decreasing pressure on pain receptors and reduce swelling by increasing fluid movement.

What type of problems can be treated with Kinesio Tape? - Although a relatively simple product, Kinesio Tape can be used to Kinesio_Tape2treat a virtually limitless number of ailments and injuries.  Such conditions include, but are not limited to neck, back and shoulder pain, arm pain (tennis elbow, carpal tunnel, golfer's elbow), headache to include migraines and tension-type headaches, jaw pain, scoliosis, buttock pain, leg pain (sciatica, hamstrings strains, calf tightness/spasms) patella tendonitis, shin splints. The treatment of muscles has the greatest effect on reducing pain mechanisms in the nervous system.

Proper Kinesio Tape application in the clinic should result in 60% to 100% resolution of symptoms.
